“Maybe this makes me seem completely oblivious, but what exactly is it that you do at work?”

For a fleeting moment, I thought I was about to experience déjà vu. Logan and I were sitting at the table eating breakfast. The last time we’d been here, it hadn’t gone so well. Suffice it to say I was a bit on edge.

I shouldn’t have been, though.

Because Logan had been nothing but reassuring ever since our talk yesterday evening. We loaded ourselves up into his car and drove to his place so he could pick up some clothes before we made our way to the restaurant. Once we got back to my house, we ate a late dinner and spent the rest of the night getting intimately reacquainted.

I wasn’t sure if it was purely a need to comfort me or if he wanted to just make up for the days we’d lost not being able to talk to one another, but Logan took the time last night to address the situation between us again.

“Okay. New rule,” Logan declared.

The front of my body had been curled into his side. His arm was wrapped around my back while his fingers traced gently over the skin at my hip.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“It’s clear we’re both very… passionate people,” he began. “We can’t do this again.”

Instantly, my body tensed.

Logan noticed and urged, “Relax, kitten. I’m referring to the time apart. Twice now there’s been entirely too much time between us getting together to spend time with one another. So, we have to make a promise to one another.”

I was intrigued, so I lifted my cheek from his chest and said, “I’m listening.”

Logan let out a laugh.

“I don’t think it’s realistic, given our personalities, to think that we won’t ever have a disagreement that could get heated,” he started. “It’s okay if that happens. But I think we should promise each other now that if that happens, we can’t let our egos get in the way of a resolution. If we can work it out right away, great. If not, we give ourselves some time to cool off separately. No matter what, we don’t go more than twenty-four hours without reconnecting.”

“How so?” I asked.

After shooting me a look of indifference, Logan replied, “I don’t necessarily think that matters. I just think it’s harmful to what we want to build here to freeze each other out for days at a time. If one of us is making the effort to connect, the other needs to respond in a reasonable amount of time.”

I didn’t think this was a bad idea at all. Logan wasn’t wrong. We’d both done the same thing to each other. Once I knew what it felt like, I realized how horrible it had been to do to him in the first place. And the fact that he had it done to him first and went on to do it to me but could at least recognize it wasn’t healthy to fostering a meaningful relationship was a big deal.
